The story starts with Alec Hoag, a notorious con man operating out of New York City in the 1840’s. Alec and his wife Melinda operated a con called the “panel game,” a method by which prostitutes and their pimps robbed foolish customers. A few police officers were involved in the ruse, as well, but soon arrested the Hoags when they learned that they weren’t being given their proper share...
