ca. 1880-90’s, [gentleman with his Star safety highwheeler]

“George Pressey invented the Star Safety in 1880. In an attempt to make a safer bicycle he altered the ordinary’s configuration so that the small wheel was now in the front handling the steering, while the rider sat above the rear drive wheel. This helped to combat the tendency of the ordinary to pitch the rider forward when encountering an obstacle.” -Owl’s Head Transportation Museum

This blog is a collection of vernacular photography and ephemera focused mainly within the curious and often misunderstood realm of 19th century America. I have a soft spot for all things silly, antiquated, macabre, and grotesque. The content is from a variety of collections; public, academic, and private. In addition, there's an occasional emphasis on Ulysses S Grant and the Civil War, as well.
