On verso “‘Pensacola’ April 25, 1876”..The Pensacola was launched in 1859, commissioned in September 1861. She joined Farragut’s Gulf blockading squadron and was engaged in the battle for New Orleans. She remained in the lower Mississippi for most of war, returning to New York for refitting in spring 1864. After two years she headed around Cape Horn to join the Pacific Squadron, where she was when this image was taken. She was in service, with periods of upgrading, until 1912, when she was sunk by the Navy in San Francisco Bay.

 Miranda Adkins Sneed, wife of Sebron Graham Sneed and mother of eleven children, arrived in Austin in 1848. Sneed and her husband were prominent in local politics and were strong supporters of secession in 1861. Their home served as a recruiting station for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and later was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.

Coates enlisted on August 29, 1861, and served as a Corporal and Sergeant in the 7th Wisconsin Infantry, Company H. He was wounded at South Mountain (September 14, 1862) and lost both eyes at Gettysburg in 1863. He was awarded the rank of Brevet Captain and the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. He was mustered out on September 1, 1864 at the expiration of his term of service.
